Bio-Mining

An innovative approach to waste management that leverages biological processes to extract valuable metals and recover resources from waste materials.

About This Process

Biomining is an innovative approach to waste management that leverages biological processes to extract valuable metals from waste materials. This method is increasingly gaining attention for its environmental and economic benefits. At Duromech®, we are committed to integrating advanced technologies like biomining to enhance our waste management solutions.

Biomining utilizes microorganisms to extract metals from ores and waste materials. These microorganisms, such as bacteria and archaea, interact with the minerals in the waste, breaking them down and releasing the metals. The process involves several stages, including preparation, inoculation, leaching, and recovery.

Why Choose Bio-Mining

Bioleaching

Utilizes microorganisms to dissolve metals from ores and waste materials. Bacteria such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans oxidize sulfide minerals, releasing metals into a solution from which they can be recovered.

Biooxidation

Involves the oxidation of metal sulfides by microorganisms to extract valuable metals. This process is essential for treating refractory ores and complex waste streams.

Phytomining

Uses plants to absorb metals from the soil. These plants, known as hyperaccumulators, concentrate metals in their tissues, which can then be harvested and processed to recover the metals.

Cost-Effective

Lower operational costs compared to conventional mining methods, particularly for low-grade ores. Reduces expenses associated with energy, equipment, and labor.

Environmental Sustainability

Reduces the need for traditional mining, which can be destructive to ecosystems. Generates fewer greenhouse gases and less waste compared to conventional methods.

Selective Recovery

Allows for selective extraction of specific metals from complex ores and waste materials, ensuring high purity of recovered resources.

Process Steps

1

Preparation

Waste material is prepared and conditioned for microbial treatment. This includes crushing and grinding to increase the surface area available for microbial attack.

2

Inoculation

Microorganisms are introduced to the waste material. The selected bacteria or archaea are applied to the prepared waste, initiating the biomining process.

3

Leaching

Microorganisms metabolize the metals, converting them into soluble forms. This step can take several weeks to months, depending on the type of material and the microorganisms used.

4

Recovery

Soluble metals are recovered from the leachate using methods such as precipitation, solvent extraction, or electrowinning for further processing and refinement.
